Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: all right hello again and welcome today we’ll be talking about ways to leverage the power of remote sensing to increase your profitability and take your drone service provider business to the next level before we get started just a couple of quick housekeeping things if you have any questions please ask them in the chat box and we’ll answer them at that we’ll also send out a recording of this webinar if you can keep it for reference or share it with colleagues later on and agriculture and drones are transforming how crops are managed around the world these low flying low-cost systems are able to create valuable new types of information that haven’t been possible until now they can be used virtually anywhere at any time for near instantaneous information which creates a huge opportunity for drone service provider and before I introduce our experts let’s do a quick poll to learn a little bit more about all of you joining us today today we’ll cover understanding your clients needs the foundation of data value and how to choose the right tools before bringing it all together with a real-world case study on how wonder own service provider was able to save a client nearly $16 per acre now experts today are at my greater the CEO plan range and forestalled wins who’s the president and chief pilot of Aero info and Forrest had a last minute commitment so he’ll be joining us a little bit late but I just wanted to bring that up in advance before I turn it over to Mike we’ll just quick I show you the results of the poll so for whom we have in the audience it looks like it’s mostly a drone service providers today with a few people who are a distributors agronomist farmers researchers and other ok thanks Sheila for the introduction again my name is my critter I’m the CEO slamming thanks again everybody for taking some time out of your day to join us before I think before I jump in I wanted to say that part of motivation for us doing this today is we’ve seen a lot of interaction in online communities amongst drone service providers people sharing best practices tips with each other and we sing a lot of good ideas going back and forth and we thought you know what we we talk to a lot of drone service providers ourselves obviously we’ve you know interacted with hundreds over the last several years operating on six different continents and dozens of different crop types we see that the the issues the questions that come up every day and that’s part of our our daily thing so what we wanted to do is just have a real brief kind of high-level discussion on some of the best practices that we see in the industry space and share that with all of you in a general sense so what we’ve outlined here and again this is only a 30-minute webinar so we’re keeping at high level but what we wanted to die do is just outline kind of a couple of high-level rules of thumb that we see you know best practices in the industry States we’ve seen a lot of people be very successful in this business we’ve seen some not be so successful and we’ve over time learned some things despite what crop you may be operating in and we recognize there’s a huge diversity of applications out there and everybody’s got their unique challenges but there are a couple of common rules of thumb that we think it was really value everybody so let me let me jump in the first key point that we make to everybody is first the most important thing you can do is to understand your clients needs what this means is I mean ultimately as a drone service provider you are the bridge between the technology and ultimately answering a problem that a grower may have or a kranish may have it at the end of the day so in a critical element I think that you know some of them are most successful DSP partners have understood is that when they’re able to deeply understand what their client’s needs are they’re able to deliver the best service and you know that that means you know really trying to understand what their operations are what are their day-to-day challenges but to put a little bit more framework on this what we wanted to do is share with you or framework that we developed and we kind of we share all the time but recognize that you know any farming operation leaves every farming operation that we’ve seen provided the right information can make an improvement to its operations and ultimately what it comes down to is as you as a service provider identifying what those information needs are and ultimately seeing if you can deliver them with the technology tools that you that you have and I think that the most successful DSPs that we’ve worked with are really adept doing that and and being flexible with the technology application to meet their client needs so we developed a framework and I’ll throw it up here briefly and I don’t have time to go into a lot of detail on this but I hopefully this will provide a little bit of framework for trying to diagnose you know what is actually valuable in terms of information that you deliver to a grower now ultimately for the information you deliver to a grower to an agronomist to have value it has to be two things one it has to be actionable and in two it has to be available at the time in the place that they need it to actually enact a decision so for example if you get an NDVI map from a satellite and it’s it’s lagging by a week of when when the actual image was taken and maybe it wasn’t collected at the resolution you need to actually distinguish between a thin crop and something maybe it’s affected by a pest condition that’s not very actionable information if it you know the information doesn’t get to the you to the farmer when they need it human Scouts on the other hand are very adapted to delivering actionable information but they’re so scarce that the availability as well so on the other end of the scale availability it speaks to the cost the time and the place and availability of information so this is a high level framework that we applied to say that you know when you look at a growers problem and your ability to deliver valuable information to it kind of apply these these quick questions your in your mind you know if I deliver this information is it actually going to be actionable by the grower and can I deliver it fast enough so that they can really do something with it now one thing I did want to add with regard to this chart is that the the low altitude drone is really unique amongst all these alternatives that you see in the chart in the sense that they can deliver much more actionable data and they can do it virtually anywhere anytime which makes them really high on the availability scale so as technology continues to develop what we see is the low altitude drone route moving to the high the upper right part of this chart which is really the high value area whereas the other options you see here kind of stuck where they are for a number of reasons but to get a little bit more specific let’s look at some some quick applications here so when we first got started we were looking in corn crops particularly we were talking to breeders and we said you know forget what you might think about remote sensing technology whether it’s from a satellite or a manned aircraft or even from a drone and just tell us what you’d like to know about your fields that you don’t know today and what we’ve heard from a lot of corn growers especially from breeders is if we could get a count of the plants in the field and we could give us you know an estimate of their size during these critical early stage development that would be really valuable information for us so we worked with our DSP partners and we work with growers to kind of come up with a tool to do that and now that’s that’s an available capability a lot of people are using it another example we have a Latin American partner who came to us and said you know what we’re really interested in doing is counting individual pineapple fruit in a field and measuring their size and the combination of the fruit count and their sizes will give us an what the yield is so you know what counting corn plants and counting pineapple plants are actually not that dissimilar from a technology point of view so we adapted the algorithms and were able to solve that particular problem similarly in a central California region there’s a lot of lettuce growers and what’s particularly a value to them same thing counting and sizing individual lettuce heads which gives them a yield in this particular case the grower had an extensive weed problem and the question came down to is it worth paying a harvesting team to go actually harvest this field given the weed weed growth and we were able to produce this information to say that you know this is your estimated yield and ultimately decided you know it’s probably not worth the time to harvest it some other examples we have partners DSP partners working in the insurance area who were wondering if they can quantify the amount of crop damage from from wind events particularly lodging and green snaps so what what has been developed is a tool that allows the you know the user to train the software to detect those types events now you can see that in the blue areas in a chart in the picture in the upper left indicating large plant regions a similar application in California water is particularly valuable to growers very expensive so anything that’s causing problems with irrigation is a particular problem in this particular case again the user was able to train the software using a special signals technique that’s built into the software to find soil moisture conditions that are above a certain threshold and here you can see the blue regions where that the soil moisture exceed that particular particular threshold and then another example in using a similar signals training technique a watermelon grower in Florida was able to detect weed growth so my point in showing these examples is that if you think they’ll endure the door sowing NDVI Maps is going to build at the NDVI or building a during service provider business you really got to go a little step further which is to identify these types of problems that growers have and then ultimately you as a service provider is the bridge again between what technology can provide and adapting a technology through your own practices to solving these real real world problems so moving the step you know kind of rule of solving that number two is once you’ve understood the needs of your growers your clients you have to choose your tools based on those on those data needs so to dig into that a little bit more detailed ultimately when you’re choosing your technology it really comes down to two things one is it going to deliver the data you actually need to build a business with and then to assuming that’s the case how efficiently can you go out and operate this system for this technology so obviously as a service provider you want to keep your costs down so on the long those lines again will will the products deliver the data you need to an important effectiveness is around trust and you know if if the data can’t be trusted it’s it’s not really actionable so again when it comes to data trust what we’re talking about here is is your system calibrated is the performance reliable so when if it’s not calibrated you may not be able to track performance over time you may not be able to compare today’s data to to last week’s data and that with takes back some of the value of the overall system and then another important thing around reliability is can you actually track the performance of the system while it’s in the air more advanced systems now we’re actually getting a lot more data to the operator while they’re on the ground and they know that they’re getting the data that they need further key points about scalability so assuming you’re successful in capturing initial clients you really start to grow you need to ask yourself you know well how am i costs going to grow how can i scale is and what this comes down to is you know if you have to pay on a per acre basis to get your data process that’s something that you might want to factor in a key point for a lot of people who are operating in regions that don’t have great network access can you process and produce all your data products offline or do you have to be connected to a cloud can actually actually to do to do your processing actually that’s a key piece and being able to scale in the regions that don’t have that internet access another key question is is the technology advancing you know a lot of these technologies are moving quickly and will those new advances be available to you after you invest in your equipments a key question finally total cost of ownership is a key one and and I think a lot of people you know will make especially around the first purchase make a decision based on initial sticker price and what we can’t emphasize enough is to really look at the total cost of ownership because I think what a lot of DSPs realize is that your time is probably the most costly item in their Titor entire endeavor and the more time you spend either collecting data or processing data that’s really going to drive the cost to your business not necessarily to cost the equipment upfront so last key point here is you know assuming you’ve identified the need to be grower assuming that you’ve invested in the right technology to solve this particular needs it comes down to actually you know you really got to learn how to use use the technology in today’s in today’s day and age we’re accustomed to you know press a button and you get the result you want and working as technology suppliers ourselves we’re continually working to meet that type of a hurdle however what we’ve seen is the most successful DSPs that we work with are the ones who really understand the technology they understand understand the needs of their their clients and they’re able to bridge that gap with flexible use of the technology and by all means if you have a unique application that you think it’s got a lot of value to it talk to us about it it’s a you know it’s something we might want to build it to our into our own tools so with all that said we’re going to start Tricia transitioning now we see Forrest Baldwin he’s one of our most successful drone service providers he’s based in Texas he’s going to share a really cool story with us from a sunny South Texas sorghum or Milo field before we do that I think we have one more full question I’ll ask Shea with a put that up and then we can introduce forests case study we do that brings us to our second poll question that you should see a live on you’re free okay so the poll question here is just real quickly of all these different types of data you know for your particular application what do you think is the most valuable to your business this type of information is valuable to us to know where we should concentrate our efforts because at the end of the day again as technology suppliers for us we’re only successful as far as US drone service providers are successful in a delivering data to your customer’s needs so okay with that said let’s transition over to Forrest Forrest thanks for joining us hey my good afternoon and thanks to everybody at slant range for having me on today I appreciate it Bhati oh good go ahead okay yeah this is a again a case study that we did down in South Texas that I think is very relevant to to what the slant range capability is and how you really sit down and start to interact with a farming operation and determining as it says in the first bullet point what is my client meet what’s the pain point in their operation and what tools do I have in my toolbox specifically the slant wrench tool box that might help them with those problems and I think you know when you find out what the pain point is in the operation or what the concern in is whether that’s a land issue a disease issue of pest issue then you’re delivering a lot more than just a pretty picture coming out of the sensor now you can really start to understand and tackle what their problems are and then take those take that data and start generating a solution based off of understanding what the problems are I think we can go to the next slide so we’re down in South Texas and and when I first sat down with us with this group of farmers down there and they’ve been farming in South Texas for a long long time second third generation operation down there one of the things they said to me is force we have a field here that has got inorganic areas wouldn’t you buy inorganic well back in the 1930s and 1940s when they were drilling oil production on to that piece of land and being along the Gulf Coast there’s a lot of saltwater that’s a byproduct of drilling and at the time way back then all that salt water spilled on to the onto the farm there were no containment ponds or anything like that it’s all filled out well as we all know salt and organic soil don’t mix very well and so they ended up with these Organic areas in this field and that picture at the top there you can see on the left-hand side that’s actually one of the pump jacks and then the dead areas over on the right side and that spilled Milo where literally nothing will grow on it forget Milo there’s no he needs there’s nothing that’s going to grow there so over the course of really since the sixties they’ve been trying to rehab this land couldn’t really get it rehabbed at all and so the concept then was well we’re just going to plant through it we’ll spray through it we know we’re losing money in those areas but there’s really nothing you can do about it so and as you can see on that in organic area where the planner went through those particular areas on that Milo there’s just nothing there you can see that will press tracts and there’s nothing there so I said you know like guys I think we’ve got a solution here and you know Google Maps was of no help because it was the wrong time of year so let’s uh let’s give this a shot with a slant range technology and see where we go and then my suggestion would be to build a variable rate application highlighting these inorganic areas and I think we did that the next slide there so what you’re looking at is the southern half of this field and you can clearly see in there where those non-productive inorganic areas are and again it’s basically the flow of the land and waters going to go to the path of least resistance that’s what that salt waters did and we did do the survey this would have been in May of 2017 Milo has been in the ground approximately two and a half nearly three months so it’s a good stand of it up and running and we were really able to highlight using the Express map where is it not only the stressed areas work but also the inorganic areas which show up as the as the really gray areas on the field and everybody’s just real quick everybody’s attention was drawn to the to the bottom left polka dot area that’s iron chlorosis so an iron deficiency in that field that that they didn’t know about which was just an added bonus so in working with the stress map and then sitting down with the farmers we were able to build using a farm management system I personally use SMS a variable rate prescription map for this field and so in essence it was a very simple variable rate if it’s a dead area turn the implement off whether it’s the sprayer or the planner if it’s a organic or growing area turn it on at the specific rate now I’m not an agronomist I’m not a crop consultant I know a lot of y’all work with a grommets and crop consultants this was varied let me just say this is very much a collaborative effort with the with the farmers in terms of application rates and in terms of planning rates and what they wanted to do in these particular areas so I let them guide me on that and even the day of the day of spring and day of planning we had some last-minute changes we to maker they wanted to in the prescription process so that’s just I think an important thing to remember is it’s very much a collaborative process if you’re not working within the grommets or a consultant working great with the farmers so the next map that just came up there is the as-applied data that came directly out of the square and this was your difficult John Deere highboy green sprayer with a hundred and twenty foot boom on there and you can see when you compare to the slant range data but that it mapped it out pretty gosh-darn accurately through there now it’s not steps per step you know per step matching there are some custom things that we did we would set down with the farmers in terms of carving out a couple more areas that they being just that non-productive even though there was some reflectivity there and again it goes back to that cooperative process and then it was a matter of when it was time to spray meeting down at that field and delivering the prescription mat to the sprayer now one word that I would throw in on this is the first time you do this if you’re working with a group that is not variable-rate savvy yet I mean maybe they have it like my group did they had the technology they just had not begun to use it I would highly recommend having either your your John Deere or your case or whatever color equipment they have rest there with you to help you walk through uploading that prescription map into the monitor on the tractor on the sprayer there are some great videos out there on YouTube that show you how to do it but there’s a couple of nuances and I have found that having that local rep with you the first time really helps out in terms of getting that up uploaded and ready to go so bottom line here’s here’s what we did we were able to identify 32 non-productive acres in that one ninety-eight concealed we took the gallon supplied last year in 2017 in terms of there’s free application and this was a this was a combination fertilizer and herbicide application herbicides with broadleaf and grass we were little pressed for time due to weather issues and we’ve calculated at 30 gallons per acre which was the applied rate a total gallon savings at a thousand thirty five gallons just on that one pass and the total cost for that spray per acre and between the fertilizer in the atrazine and the outlet was fifty one dollars and 67 cents so that’s where that savings of fifty one sixty seven an acre comes and if you divide 1035 by 30 gallons per acre at times the fifty one sixty seven that’s where the seventeen hundred and eight and three dollars in savings comes and that is bottom-line savings right there that’s straight to the bottom line that’s money not spent money in the pocket and I think as we all know in farming how how important that is given the current state of commodity prices that most of our folks are dealing with whether it be corn cotton wheat what-have-you beans out there so as the important thing is that prescription amount can be used throughout the season if they’re going to go in and do a burn down prior to harvest I could take that same prescription map they can tell me what gallons break or they want to apply I’ll make that send it down to them easy to upload into their green storm monitor just using a thumb drive I think the real important thing is that that that one savings was impressive but but what these guys are really excited about is this is going to give them next year the first opportunity they have had in nearly four years to put cotton back into that field cotton in South Texas is a very input intensive crop to grow given the climate down there the amount of rain and the high humidity and temperatures and it just hasn’t been economical for them to put cotton in there given how many passes they have to make over the field throughout the course of growing season so they they are estimating potentially a gross gain of about four hundred and eighty dollars an acre in that one hundred and ninety acres that’s a return over what the Milo return see moving forward in 2019 so we’re very excited about that they’re excited about it and you know I think it’s a really really good feeling for those of us that are in agriculture when you can go to and to a to a farming company or a farmer and be able to deliver that kind of return on investment for them and and I know they really appreciate that the effort they’re liquid in that collaborative process so of course that you know that’s a great story I you know when we first heard it we thought this would be great to share with everybody you know this is just one example in one crop type it’s it’s probably you know relatively common in that particular area but I think it illustrates the important process here that you use which is to really sit down with the grower and understand you know what is their problem you know the technology doesn’t necessarily you know look for high salt content soil but what you’re able to do is you know figure out what elements the ecology might be applied to this particular problem and kind of bridge that gap between what what we’re able to do as technology suppliers ultimately what the grower needs and I think that’s where success is found for you and others and that’s the type of thing share with everybody so anyway we’re we’re approaching the end of our half hour here and before we hang up we wanted to open up to any a couple of quick questions if we can otherwise thank you everybody so let’s see if we have any questions sure yeah we do have a couple of questions before I launch into those I just wanted to share the results from our second poll question and that would be which data type is most valuable to your business looks like most of you said nutrients dress–i closely followed by and DiBiase and then past conditions and yield potential and with that we have we do have a couple of questions the first one is if you have an example of regarding the wine and grape industry we do we have a number of clients that are working a lot in wine and grapes both in California also in regions of Australia in particular again some of the best examples that we find that talking directly to to those other service providers they’re the ones working with directly with the growers and generally speaking if you’re working in a crop type we need to be able to connect you with somebody else who’s working in another area that would not be competitive with your business but could maybe share some best practices and I think and some of the online communities you’ll need a good place to find those types of people but to answer your question yes there’s this technologies being used quite a bit in vendors our second question is can you elaborate on signal training so signal training is a technique that we developed what we recognized that is that it’s extraordinarily difficult for for us as technology developers to try to create a customized solution to every problem that’s out there so what we built into the software was the capability for users to train the software to their own needs and what this basically allows you to do is isolate individual signals whether there’s spatial or spectral signatures in the field it’s as simple as drawing a box around the item that you’re interested in and the software trains itself to look for that particular characteristic and then shows you in the rest of the field where that particular characteristic is reappearing it’s been used to do weed detection we’ve used it in some of the examples I showed you earlier you know looking for lodging looking for high soil moisture content so there’s a there’s a range of applications but if you’re interested in hearing more about that capability feel free to get in touch with us our next question is that is the signal training for soil moisture included in the software yeah it is it’s included in our in our pro package what one thing I’ll add shale is that all the examples that I showed you before our capabilities that are currently in them in the package it’s it’s a matter of us maybe showing you how to use it alright our next question if I upload a Northam as a ik of a slight at 5 meter height can you count the spinach those germinating one week after seeding what costs would it have per hectare that’s a good question five meters is relatively low I think we’d have to we’ve done a lot of plant counting cauliflower lettuce corn jeez there’s a lot but to answer that specific one we want to take a look at it so as far as cost goes it doesn’t we don’t charge it all on a per acre basis there’s just the cost for obviously the drone and the sensing device and then and then there’s a unlimited use license for processing software so you can process as much as you want and it doesn’t the cost is not affected by that but as far as it was a stitch it’s something we’d have to look at how what the planting density is in particular and what the size of the plant is at this stage you want to count it so please get us on that one next question is uh do you have any information on working with potato Gurr yes so we do have some DSPs up in kind of the the Idaho region kind of in the central western portion of the US I think it’s another one I get in touch with us they are working on some specific detecting some specific conditions and potato crops and we’ve actually been working on adapting our that special signal detection capability for detecting particular virus that presence in the potato field so you’re just in that again get in touch with us any experience on he trusts I’m sorry on heat stress yes when we visit Costa Rica it’s awfully hot down there that we get stressed out about that I guess but anyway sorry if you’re looking at heat stress I mean there are a different class of sensors you know obviously there’s thermal sensors and what your altom utley looking at the sauce and hydration condition of the plants spectral sensors in the visible and the near infer brand infrared bands have some capability to detect the dehydration stress that might be a result of heat but thermal cameras are a little bit more adept at doing that however the processing of thermal data is a bit complex so generally speaking heat stress is something that it will appear as a stress condition but it’s going to be up to correlating that with other factors specifically what is the heat index over the last couple of days to kind of attribute that stress condition to heat our next question is that you mentioned that you have a process to maintain trust in the spectral data especially during flight operation can you elaborate on the sensor calibration and the QA QC process for spectral data yes so one thing I tweaked you know this is addiction to a little bit of a technical matter that there’s there’s other material that we can reference if you’re interested in learning more but when you’re using a spectral sense or whether it’s just an RGB color camera or a narrowband multi spectral system or even a hyper spectral system recognize that the color of sunlight is evolving continuously whether it’s a sunny day a cloudy day or a change of season and ultimately what we’re trying to do is estimate pigment concentrations in the plants based on how much sunlight is absorbed by those by those pigments if the color of sunlight changes you’re going to get a different measurement unless you have some method of correcting it traditionally what is done is to image just what’s all the calibration panel that’s put on the ground but technically that’s only valid for the one image that has the panel in it we developed a new technology several years ago which we’ve actually had a couple of patents issued in the US on that puts an on-court calibration sensor onto the system so every single frame of the multispectral device is automatically can’t calibrate it for changing sunlight conditions and that enables you to compare data over time and that’s that’s kind of a critical element to use your data to these sort of models or things like that every sensor that we develop develop and every ship is individually calibrated against the sunlight standard so those are calibrated before they ship and they don’t they don’t really need to be recalibrated for that particular measurement after they’re delivered on top of that as far as in-flight data goes our new integration with DJI we announced a partnership with DJI in late March our 3 px sensor system has an integration with that particular aircraft that allows the operator to actually see sensor data on on their hand controller while it’s in flight to ensure that you’re getting the data that you need and actually the calibration signals and that’s basically the amount of sunlight you’re getting to the sensor is actually a parent to you while while the incident in flight and that’s that all goes to improve reliability to make sure you’re getting a beta D my next questions one for Forrest why doesn’t the non-productive area just show up it’s high stress I’m sorry why did the non-productive areas show up just as high stress yes okay yeah that’s a it has to do with soil health in that particular area it just it’s just a bad part of soil and you know it all begins with the soil when you’re out there and the non-productive areas we’re completely bare if that’s the question completely bare so you’re not going to get any reflectance and dose but then as we moved away from those out into the margins around there where the soil composition of soil chemistry started to change that’s where you started to see more of those high stress areas and so when we were mapping out the variable rate prescription we were able to come nibble around those areas and take more of those office yeah as the farmer Saul said in that project our next question is treat counting possible with your population tool tree passing so the the techniques that we’ve developed and we showed you here today are geared towards primarily row crops as far as counting trees we are that is a you know orchards in general are important crops for a lot of our customers and we are actively working on a capability that we will plan to release in the coming months that speaks directly to tools that will be applied in orchards for our next question do you offer training on how to use flat view yes we do we provide I mean there’s there’s online videos there’s a user manual but I think the most effective thing is we do provide kind of one-on-one training whether you want to actually visit us here at San Diego or online we do one-on-one training or one with your team and I think that’s the most effective thing ultimately like the forest example a lot of times success comes down to really understanding how the technology works so you can make that leap to figuring out how to apply it to a problem so we do recommend the next question is another one for for it how did you get this plant range data into your SMS hey great question slant a few exports as a shapefile and the shapefile really is the key to going into any of the variety of SMS systems that are out there not SMS with our management systems that are out there so as in a compliment slant range here they have done a really really good job in developing the shapefile and really lightening the load of that shapefile in terms of size and I can tell you as an SMS user it flows seamlessly out of slant range as a shapefile and then into SMS without a problem I’m for a next question I own a 3-piece sensor but having issues to plant counts how can I solve that sorry having issues to do what having issues to plant count flat count so player counting it has to be done well first of all there’s a critical phase of development when it needs to be done for corn that’s typically V to the three and there has to be relatively good separation between individual plants so ultimately I mean no the the algorithm is segmenting individual plants but if they’re overlapping so if you’re a little late in development once you get to before or later it’s a little too late to do to do the counting the other thing is you have to fly at the right altitude so ultimately we need to get a certain number of pixels on each plant to recognize it as a corn plant so the altitude you fly at the speed you fly at are critical but if you fly it at the right window of growth at the right altitude in the right flight speed we typically see a errors that are less than five percent and if you’re not seeing that please give us a call and we can you do a number of pointers after the next one you didn’t mention anything specific about the 3ps can you talk a little bit about the advantages over the three p and other sensors yeah I did mention the three px briefly so the PBX is the one that’s we developed with the partnership with DJI which is it’s basically integrated with the with the drone much more tightly than our 3-peat sensor is so from an imaging from a data products point of view you’re going to get the same products out of the three P or 3 px the advantage of the three px is it’s just a tighter integration with the aircraft it’s an easy on easy off mount on to the regular gimbal mount for the for the 200 series you can actually use the 3 px on on the inspire the M 100 as well or the m600 sorry but with the M 200 series there’s actually flight data coming down from the sensor to your hand controller so you’ll see you can see footprints on the ground rear images are taken you can see number of images taken you can see basically health status information so it just makes operations a lot more efficient but from a data point of view that it’s a very next question that do you have any examples of working in the almond industry yes we are well almonds are large crop here in California where we’re based and as I mentioned not just in almonds but in other orchard crops we have a number of customers working within citrus and almonds pistachios in California Florida and Australia in particular and as I mentioned earlier we are working on some unique capabilities for orchard crops and if you’re interested in what we have done with almond to date give us a call and we can share some some more details but again we have a more specialized orchard tools coming up in the coming month do you have any experience on oil palm oil palm is actually relatively we do have some DSPs in Latin America in particular that have a lot of experience with oil palm I think in Colombia we have one of our DSP partners is also a distributor based at Panama City is working in oil palm and again a lot of these questions that are specific to different crop applications we’re happy to answer the questions we can but in many cases we’d like to put you in touch with others that are using a technology in those applications do you have any plans for a standalone app or sweep for the crystal sky monitor we are continuing to explore tighter integration with along along those entire lines with with with with DJI and I’ll just say that you know we’re working on deeper integration and we’ll have some announcements when that when they’re ready kind of 3px be integrated or used with any other type of drone or controller sure so you don’t necessarily have to use a 3px on board a DJI m200 series as I mentioned you can use it on the inspire or the the m600 and it uses the same mount you can get power through that interface however if you use it on another drone you’re not going to get those advantages of the power and the data interface so you can still collect data with it but from that point of view what’s 3p might be you know more cost effective solution if you’re using a drone package our next question is another one for forests you stated that you use multi spectral and RGB for the map straight forward and DVI or env re or other bands you know we used strictly the NDVI out of slant range for that for that map that we showed you you could have used the RGB but we felt like in cooperation with with growers as we were going through the data that the slant range stress map which is the NDB I gave us the best results was what we needed to work off of going forward on that all right for a next question is it possible to detect and measure plant line failures in sugarcane crop that’s a good question and I’m not sure if I know the answer to that one I and I do know that we have customers working in sugarcane and again another another exist to puts you in touch with some of the people that are using our systems and sugarcane after our next question how much do you see your drone service providers charging for their services it’s really it’s kind of all over the place it depends it’s gotta be a better question for for us but what we what we’ve seen is it really depends on the crop you’re operating and what it comes down to is how how how valuable is the problem you’re solving you know ultimately the value of the data comes down to that question on it and I also think Mike it depends on what part of the country you’re in and what crop you’re flying and and potentially even with the commodity prices at that particular point in the year I you know I’ve seen it done everywhere from a cost per acre with a declining cost as the acres increases to package deals for multiple flights through them throughout the growing season and then back to Mike’s point you know what is it you’re actually trying to accomplish and and sometimes those are the one-off projects as well that that fall into that special area so you just got to understand what’s going on out there what the what the current needs are and what the markets can bear but there’s several different models for those off us our next question is that what new maps are you working on and how soon will they be available I’ll just say that we’re working on some some more some capabilities that are customized to some specific crop applications that would see particularly high demand around let me just say that the tools that we put into our systems you know there’s a balance you need to strike between being flexible enough to be used in multiple crops and if you make them more specific to some crop allocations you can be more effective with those so I’ll just say that we you know are some specific applications to some high-value problems that we see pretty commonly and we’ll have some announcements on those and the towards off some went into the fall you mentioned your tight integration with the DJI aircraft is there or will there be any similar integrations with the bird side views Firefly six yeah we’ve had we’ve had customers have fantastic success with with the Firefly and the bird’s eye view team particularly in areas that have you know a requirement is large area coverage and it’s out of the scope of this conversation but you know fixed-wing to rotary rotary lift aircraft is a whole debate and the Firefly of six is a great balance between those capabilities we do have an integration with the Firefly six and we have customers using them and we have actually distributors who are sowing integrated package and we’d be happy to put you in touch with them if you’re interested great and our next question is another one for fourth what was the rough timeline from collecting this might range data to making the variable rate application okay yeah great great question so the thing to keep in mind is that sometimes what we do is drone service providers takes a little bit of time I mean we’re dealing with growing seasons we’re dealing with reports that are often very very busy and have a number of competing interests around the farm so again just a timeline on this particular project is the crop that Milo went into ground roughly in March we flew it in May started you know looking at the results soon thereafter and then working through the all in developing the because we had to go through when I say working in the fall keep in mind that that this is a multi crop grower down there so by by this time last year they’re harvesting the Milo then we’re running straight into cotton after that then we’re running into fall fieldwork so it’s really didn’t to the fall when we were able to sit down and start mapping out the variable rate information finalized it’s in February and then put it into play in March with the fertiliser herbicide application and about a week later on the planning description so I think it’s know there’s some of the decisions to make and some of the data you collect it’s a multi-year process on getting this done especially depending on the crop location some of the Milo I flew down there last year that we’re going to develop planning prescriptions or won’t be used in till 2019 just be the proper occasion our next question is another one for you Forrest what plant range sensor do you I have got a 2p right now and it’s a workhorse and no problems with it yeah I’ve got it mounted on an M 100 and I don’t know how many thousands of miles it’s flown but it has it has worked really really well for us and how do you manage ahead I was going to jump in and say we’re well past the half hour and then I’m at beacon can you answer any questions but as long as we have questions I can keep going but okay sure yeah there’s still plenty of it through so I guess is less to you guys whenever we want to call it and answer the questions as separately so for our next one is how do you manage to compare vegetation indices through their time without radiometric calibrated images let’s well that’s a good question I mean the way our system operates there’s a there’s a calibrated measurement for every single image so that’s really not not really an issue so I you know I I guess in the circumstances that the sensor failed I think it maybe that’s the question but again I guess that’s not a failure that we’ve seen generally speaking if if you’re you know if you’re using another sensor system that doesn’t you know you have gaps between available measurements you have to interpolate that and that can be complex especially if you’re dealing in partly cloudy situations let’s do two one all right two more questions um do you recommend drone deployed for mission planning and can it be used for image image processing as prism also mention we have DJI mitrice and to 202 times platform yeah we have a we do have an integration with drone employ and we have a lot of customers that are using drone deploy as their as their flight planning software and something maybe we don’t we don’t promote enough but if you know if you want to take the images from our sensor system and have them process deploy you can do that and bypass our processing methods and some people have applications and do that and they’re very happy with it and again it’s probably something we don’t promote as much as much as we should but that capability and integration does exist one final note I just before I ask the final question of our panelists a few people have been asking if this webinar will be available for retail and yes it definitely will we’ll send out a link to the recorded versions you can go through and listen to the answers but any type of the future and for our final question is the M 100 fill a drone that your sensor can be installed or as I M 100 is fill a drone 0 of your day to join us before I think
0 before I jump in I wanted to say that
0 part of motivation for us doing this
0 today is we&;ve seen a lot of interaction
0 in online communities amongst drone
0 service providers people sharing best
0 practices tips with each other and we
0 sing a lot of good ideas going back and
0 forth and we thought you know what we we
0 talk to a lot of drone service providers
0 ourselves obviously we&;ve you know
0 interacted with hundreds over the last
0 several years operating on six different
0 continents and dozens of different crop
0 types we see that the the issues the
0 questions that come up every day and
0 that&;s part of our our daily thing so
0 what we wanted to do is just have a real
0 brief kind of high-level discussion on
0 some of the best practices that we see
0 in the industry space and share that
0 with all of you in a general sense so
0 what we&;ve outlined here and again this
0 is only a 30-minute webinar so we&;re
0 keeping at high level but what we wanted
0 to die do is just outline kind of a
0 couple of high-level rules of thumb that
0 we see you know best practices in the
0 industry States we&;ve seen a lot of
0 people be very successful in this
0 business we&;ve seen some not be so
0 successful and we&;ve over time learned
0 some things despite what crop you may be
0 operating in and we recognize there&;s a
0 huge diversity of applications out there
0 and everybody&;s got their unique
0 challenges but there are a couple of
0 common rules of thumb that we think it
0 was really value everybody so let me let
0 me jump in the first key point that we
0 make to everybody is first the most
0 important thing you can do is to
0 understand your clients needs what this
0 means is I mean ultimately as a drone
0 service provider you are the bridge
0 between the technology and ultimately
0 answering a problem that a grower may
0 have or a kranish may have it at the end
0 of the day so in a critical element I
0 think that you know some of them are
0 most successful DSP partners have
0 understood is that when they&;re able to
0 deeply understand what their client&;s
0 needs are they&;re able to deliver the
0 best service and you know that that
0 means you know really trying to
0 understand what their operations are
0 what are their day-to-day challenges but
0 to put a little bit more framework on
0 this what we wanted to do is share with
0 you or framework that we developed and
0 we kind of we share all the time but
0 recognize that you know any farming
0 operation leaves every farming operation
0 that we&;ve seen provided the right
0 information can make an improvement to
0 its operations and ultimately what it
0 comes down to is as you as a service
0 provider identifying what those
0 information needs are and ultimately
0 seeing if you can deliver them with the
0 technology tools that you that you have
0 and I think that the most successful
0 DSPs that we&;ve worked with are really
0 adept
0 doing that and and being flexible with
0 the technology application to meet their
0 client needs
0 so we developed a framework and I&;ll
0 throw it up here briefly and I don&;t
0 have time to go into a lot of detail on
0 this but I hopefully this will provide a
0 little bit of framework for trying to
0 diagnose you know what is actually
0 valuable in terms of information that
0 you deliver to a grower now ultimately
0 for the information you deliver to a
0 grower to an agronomist to have value it
0 has to be two things one it has to be
0 actionable
0 and in two it has to be available at the
0 time in the place that they need it to
0 actually enact a decision so for example
0 if you get an NDVI map from a satellite
0 and it&;s it&;s lagging by a week of when
0 when the actual image was taken and
0 maybe it wasn&;t collected at the
0 resolution you need to actually
0 distinguish between a thin crop and
0 something maybe it&;s affected by a pest
0 condition that&;s not very actionable
0 information if it you know the
0 information doesn&;t get to the you to
0 the farmer when they need it
0 human Scouts on the other hand are very
0 adapted to delivering actionable
0 information but they&;re so scarce that
0 the availability as well so on the other
0 end of the scale availability it speaks
0 to the cost the time and the place and
0 availability of information so this is a
0 high level framework that we applied to
0 say that you know when you look at a
0 growers problem and your ability to
0 deliver valuable information to it kind
0 of apply these these quick questions
0 your in your mind you know if I deliver
0 this information is it actually going to
0 be actionable by the grower and can I
0 deliver it fast enough so that they can
0 really do something with it now one
0 thing I did want to add with regard to
0 this chart is that the the low altitude
0 drone is really unique amongst all these
0 alternatives that you see in the chart
0 in the sense that they can deliver much
0 more actionable data and they can do it
0 virtually anywhere anytime which makes
0 them really high on the availability
0 scale so as technology continues to
0 develop what we see is the low altitude
0 drone route moving to the high the upper
0 right part of this chart which is really
0 the high value
0 area whereas the other options you see
0 here kind of stuck where they are for a
0 number of reasons but to get a little
0 bit more specific let&;s look at some
0 some quick applications here so when we
0 first got started we were looking in
0 corn crops particularly we were talking
0 to breeders and we said you know forget
0 what you might think about remote
0 sensing technology whether it&;s from a
0 satellite or a manned aircraft or even
0 from a drone and just tell us what you&;d
0 like to know about your fields that you
0 don&;t know today and what we&;ve heard
0 from a lot of corn growers especially
0 from breeders is if we could get a count
0 of the plants in the field and we could
0 give us you know an estimate of their
0 size during these critical early stage
0 development that would be really
0 valuable information for us so we worked
0 with our DSP partners and we work with
0 growers to kind of come up with a tool
0 to do that and now that&;s that&;s an
0 available capability a lot of people are
0 using it another example we have a Latin
0 American partner who came to us and said
0 you know what we&;re really interested in
0 doing is counting individual pineapple
0 fruit in a field and measuring their
0 size and the combination of the fruit
0 count and their sizes will give us an
0 what the yield is so you know what
0 counting corn plants and counting
0 pineapple plants are actually not that
0 dissimilar from a technology point of
0 view so we adapted the algorithms and
0 were able to solve that particular
0 problem
0 similarly in a central California region
0 there&;s a lot of lettuce growers and
0 what&;s particularly a value to them
0 same thing counting and sizing
0 individual lettuce heads which gives
0 them a yield in this particular case the
0 grower had an extensive weed problem and
0 the question came down to is it worth
0 paying a harvesting team to go actually
0 harvest this field given the weed weed
0 growth and we were able to produce this
0 information to say that you know this is
0 your estimated yield and ultimately
0 decided you know it&;s probably not worth
0 the time to harvest it some other
0 examples we have partners DSP partners
0 working in the insurance area who were
0 wondering if they can quantify the
0 amount of crop damage from from wind
0 events particularly lodging
0 and green snaps so what what has been
0 developed is a tool that allows the you
0 know the user to train the software to
0 detect those types events now you can
0 see that in the blue areas in a chart in
0 the picture in the upper left indicating
0 large plant regions a similar
0 application in California water is
0 particularly valuable to growers very
0 expensive so anything that&;s causing
0 problems with irrigation is a particular
0 problem in this particular case again
0 the user was able to train the software
0 using a special signals technique that&;s
0 built into the software to find soil
0 moisture conditions that are above a
0 certain threshold and here you can see
0 the blue regions where that the soil
0 moisture exceed that particular
0 particular threshold and then another
0 example in using a similar signals
0 training technique a watermelon grower
0 in Florida was able to detect weed
0 growth so my point in showing these
0 examples is that if you think they&;ll
0 endure the door sowing NDVI Maps is
0 going to build at the NDVI or building a
0 during service provider business you
0 really got to go a little step further
0 which is to identify these types of
0 problems that growers have and then
0 ultimately you as a service provider is
0 the bridge again between what technology
0 can provide and adapting a technology
0 through your own practices to solving
0 these real real world problems so moving
0 the step you know kind of rule of
0 solving that number two is once you&;ve
0 understood the needs of your growers
0 your clients you have to choose your
0 tools based on those on those data needs
0 so to dig into that a little bit more
0 detailed ultimately when you&;re choosing
0 your technology it really comes down to
0 two things one is it going to deliver
0 the data you actually need to build a
0 business with and then to assuming
0 that&;s the case how efficiently can you
0 go out and operate this system for this
0 technology so obviously as a service
0 provider you want to keep your costs
0 down so on the long those lines again
0 will will the products deliver the data
0 you need to an important
0 effectiveness is around trust and you
0 know if if the data can&;t be trusted
0 it&;s it&;s not really actionable so again
0 when it comes to data trust what we&;re
0 talking about here is is your system
0 calibrated is the performance reliable
0 so when if it&;s not calibrated you may
0 not be able to track performance over
0 time you may not be able to compare
0 today&;s data to to last week&;s data and
0 that with takes back some of the value
0 of the overall system and then another
0 important thing around reliability is
0 can you actually track the performance
0 of the system while it&;s in the air more
0 advanced systems now we&;re actually
0 getting a lot more data to the operator
0 while they&;re on the ground and they
0 know that they&;re getting the data that
0 they need further key points about
0 scalability so assuming you&;re
0 successful in capturing initial clients
0 you really start to grow you need to ask
0 yourself you know well how am i costs
0 going to grow how can i scale is and
0 what this comes down to is you know if
0 you have to pay on a per acre basis to
0 get your data process that&;s something
0 that you might want to factor in a key
0 point for a lot of people who are
0 operating in regions that don&;t have
0 great network access can you process and
0 produce all your data products offline
0 or do you have to be connected to a
0 cloud can actually actually to do to do
0 your processing actually that&;s a key
0 piece and being able to scale in the
0 regions that don&;t have that internet
0 access another key question is is the
0 technology advancing you know a lot of
0 these technologies are moving quickly
0 and will those new advances be available
0 to you after you invest in your
0 equipments a key question
0 finally total cost of ownership is a key
0 one and and I think a lot of people you
0 know will make especially around the
0 first purchase make a decision based on
0 initial sticker price and what we can&;t
0 emphasize enough is to really look at
0 the total cost of ownership because I
0 think what a lot of DSPs realize is that
0 your time is probably the most costly
0 item in their Titor entire endeavor and
0 the more time you spend either
0 collecting data or processing data
0 that&;s really going to drive the cost to
0 your business not necessarily to cost
0 the equipment upfront so
0 last key point here is you know assuming
0 you&;ve identified the need to be grower
0 assuming that you&;ve invested in the
0 right technology to solve this
0 particular needs it comes down to
0 actually you know you really got to
0 learn how to use use the technology in
0 today&;s in today&;s day and age we&;re
0 accustomed to you know press a button
0 and you get the result you want and
0 working as technology suppliers
0 ourselves we&;re continually working to
0 meet that type of a hurdle however what
0 we&;ve seen is the most successful DSPs
0 that we work with are the ones who
0 really understand the technology they
0 understand understand the needs of their
0 their clients and they&;re able to bridge
0 that gap with flexible use of the
0 technology and by all means if you have
0 a unique application that you think it&;s
0 got a lot of value to it talk to us
0 about it it&;s a you know it&;s something
0 we might want to build it to our into
0 our own tools so with all that said
0 we&;re going to start Tricia
0 transitioning now we see Forrest Baldwin
0 he&;s one of our most successful drone
0 service providers he&;s based in Texas
0 he&;s going to share a really cool story
0 with us from a sunny South Texas sorghum
0 or Milo field before we do that I think
0 we have one more full question I&;ll ask
0 Shea with a put that up and then we can
0 introduce forests case study we do that
0 brings us to our second poll question
0 that you should see a live on you&;re
0 free okay so the poll question here is
0 just real quickly of all these different
0 types of data you know for your
0 particular application what do you think
0 is the most valuable to your business
0 this type of information is valuable to
0 us to know where we should concentrate
0 our efforts because at the end of the
0 day again as technology suppliers for us
0 we&;re only successful as far as US drone
0 service providers are successful in a
0 delivering data to your customer&;s needs
0 so okay with that said let&;s transition
0 over to Forrest Forrest thanks for
0 joining us hey my good afternoon and
0 thanks to everybody at slant range for
0 having me on today I appreciate it
0 Bhati oh good go ahead okay yeah this is
0 a again a case study that we did down in
0 South Texas that I think is very
0 relevant to to what the slant range
0 capability is and how you really sit
0 down and start to interact with a
0 farming operation and determining as it
0 says in the first bullet point what is
0 my client meet what&;s the pain point in
0 their operation and what tools do I have
0 in my toolbox specifically the slant
0 wrench tool box that might help them
0 with those problems and I think you know
0 when you find out what the pain point is
0 in the operation or what the concern in
0 is whether that&;s a land issue a disease
0 issue of pest issue then you&;re
0 delivering a lot more than just a pretty
0 picture coming out of the sensor now you
0 can really start to understand and
0 tackle what their problems are and then
0 take those take that data and start
0 generating a solution based off of
0 understanding what the problems are I
0 think we can go to the next slide so
0 we&;re down in South Texas and and when I
0 first sat down with us with this group
0 of farmers down there and they&;ve been
0 farming in South Texas for a long long
0 time second third generation operation
0 down there one of the things they said
0 to me is force we have a field here that
0 has got inorganic areas wouldn&;t you buy
0 inorganic well back in the 1930s and
0 1940s when they were drilling oil
0 production on to that piece of land and
0 being along the Gulf Coast there&;s a lot
0 of saltwater that&;s a byproduct of
0 drilling and at the time way back then
0 all that salt water spilled on to the
0 onto the farm there were no containment
0 ponds or anything like that it&;s all
0 filled out well as we all know salt and
0 organic soil don&;t mix very well and so
0 they ended up with these
0 Organic areas in this field and that
0 picture at the top there you can see on
0 the left-hand side that&;s actually one
0 of the pump jacks and then the dead
0 areas over on the right side and that
0 spilled Milo where literally nothing
0 will grow on it forget Milo there&;s no
0 he needs there&;s nothing that&;s going to
0 grow there so over the course of really
0 since the sixties they&;ve been trying to
0 rehab this land couldn&;t really get it
0 rehabbed at all and so the concept then
0 was well we&;re just going to plant
0 through it we&;ll spray through it
0 we know we&;re losing money in those
0 areas but there&;s really nothing you can
0 do about it so and as you can see on
0 that in organic area where the planner
0 went through those particular areas on
0 that Milo there&;s just nothing there you
0 can see that will press tracts and
0 there&;s nothing there so I said you know
0 like guys I think we&;ve got a solution
0 here and you know Google Maps was of no
0 help because it was the wrong time of
0 year so let&;s uh let&;s give this a shot
0 with a slant range technology and see
0 where we go
0 and then my suggestion would be to build
0 a variable rate application highlighting
0 these inorganic areas and I think we did
0 that the next slide there
0 so what you&;re looking at is the
0 southern half of this field and you can
0 clearly see in there where those
0 non-productive inorganic areas are and
0 again it&;s basically the flow of the
0 land and waters going to go to the path
0 of least resistance that&;s what that
0 salt waters did and we did do the survey
0 this would have been in May of 2017 Milo
0 has been in the ground approximately two
0 and a half nearly three months so it&;s a
0 good stand of it up and running and we
0 were really able to highlight using the
0 Express map where is it not only the
0 stressed areas work but also the
0 inorganic areas which show up as the as
0 the really gray areas on the field and
0 everybody&;s just real quick everybody&;s
0 attention was drawn to the to the bottom
0 left polka dot area that&;s iron
0 chlorosis so an iron deficiency in that
0 field that that they didn&;t know about
0 which was just an added bonus so in
0 working with the stress map and then
0 sitting down with the farmers we were
0 able to build using a farm management
0 system I personally use SMS a variable
0 rate prescription map for this field and
0 so in essence it was a very simple
0 variable rate if it&;s a dead area turn
0 the implement off whether it&;s the
0 sprayer or the planner if it&;s a organic
0 or growing area turn it on at the
0 specific rate now I&;m not an agronomist
0 I&;m not a crop consultant I know a lot
0 of y&;all work with a grommets and crop
0 consultants this was varied let me just
0 say this is very much a collaborative
0 effort with the with the farmers in
0 terms of application rates and in terms
0 of planning rates and what they wanted
0 to do in these particular areas so I let
0 them guide me on that and even the day
0 of the day of spring and day of planning
0 we had some last-minute changes we
0 to maker they wanted to in the
0 prescription process so that&;s just I
0 think an important thing to remember is
0 it&;s very much a collaborative process
0 if you&;re not working within the
0 grommets or a consultant working great
0 with the farmers so the next map that
0 just came up there is the as-applied
0 data that came directly out of the
0 square and this was your difficult John
0 Deere highboy green sprayer with a
0 hundred and twenty foot boom on there
0 and you can see when you compare to the
0 slant range data but that it mapped it
0 out pretty gosh-darn accurately through
0 there now it&;s not steps per step you
0 know per step matching there are some
0 custom things that we did we would set
0 down with the farmers in terms of
0 carving out a couple more areas that
0 they being just that non-productive even
0 though there was some reflectivity there
0 and again it goes back to that
0 cooperative process and then it was a
0 matter of when it was time to spray
0 meeting down at that field and
0 delivering the prescription mat to the
0 sprayer now one word that I would throw
0 in on this is the first time you do this
0 if you&;re working with a group that is
0 not variable-rate savvy yet I mean maybe
0 they have it like my group did they had
0 the technology they just had not begun
0 to use it I would highly recommend
0 having either your your John Deere or
0 your case or whatever color equipment
0 they have rest there with you to help
0 you walk through uploading that
0 prescription map into the monitor on the
0 tractor on the sprayer there are some
0 great videos out there on YouTube that
0 show you how to do it but there&;s a
0 couple of nuances and I have found that
0 having that local rep with you the first
0 time
0 really helps out in terms of getting
0 that up uploaded and ready to go so
0 bottom line here&;s here&;s what we did we
0 were able to identify 32 non-productive
0 acres in that one
0 ninety-eight concealed we took the
0 gallon supplied last year in 2017 in
0 terms of there&;s free application and
0 this was a this was a combination
0 fertilizer and herbicide application
0 herbicides with broadleaf and grass we
0 were little pressed for time due to
0 weather issues and we&;ve calculated at
0 30 gallons per acre which was the
0 applied rate a total gallon savings at a
0 thousand thirty five gallons just on
0 that one pass and the total cost for
0 that spray per acre and between the
0 fertilizer in the atrazine and the
0 outlet was fifty one dollars and 67
0 cents so that&;s where that savings of
0 fifty one sixty seven an acre comes and
0 if you divide 1035 by 30 gallons per
0 acre at times the fifty one sixty seven
0 that&;s where the seventeen hundred and
0 eight and three dollars in savings comes
0 and that is bottom-line savings right
0 there that&;s straight to the bottom line
0 that&;s money not spent money in the
0 pocket and I think as we all know in
0 farming how how important that is given
0 the current state of commodity prices
0 that most of our folks are dealing with
0 whether it be corn cotton wheat
0 what-have-you beans out there
0 so as the important thing is that
0 prescription amount can be used
0 throughout the season if they&;re going
0 to go in and do a burn down prior to
0 harvest I could take that same
0 prescription map they can tell me what
0 gallons break or they want to apply I&;ll
0 make that send it down to them easy to
0 upload into their green storm monitor
0 just using a thumb drive I think the
0 real important thing is that that that
0 one savings was impressive but but what
0 these guys are really excited about is
0 this is going to give them next year the
0 first opportunity they have had in
0 nearly four years to put cotton back
0 into that field cotton in South Texas is
0 a very input intensive crop to grow
0 given the climate down there the amount
0 of rain and the high humidity and
0 temperatures and it just hasn&;t been
0 economical for them to put cotton in
0 there given how many passes they have to
0 make over the field throughout the
0 course of growing season so they they
0 are estimating potentially a gross gain
0 of about four hundred and eighty dollars
0 an acre in that one hundred and ninety
0 acres that&;s a return over what the Milo
0 return see moving forward in 2019 so
0 we&;re very excited about that they&;re
0 excited about it and you know I think
0 it&;s a really really good feeling for
0 those of us that are in agriculture when
0 you can go to and to a to a farming
0 company or a farmer and be able to
0 deliver that kind of return on
0 investment for them and and I know they
0 really appreciate that the effort
0 they&;re liquid in that collaborative
0 process so of course that you know
0 that&;s a great story I you know when we
0 first heard it we thought this would be
0 great to share with everybody you know
0 this is just one example in one crop
0 type it&;s it&;s probably you know
0 relatively common in that particular
0 area but I think it illustrates the
0 important process here that you use
0 which is to really sit down with the
0 grower and understand you know what is
0 their problem you know the technology
0 doesn&;t necessarily you know look for
0 high salt content soil but what you&;re
0 able to do is you know figure out what
0 elements the ecology might be applied to
0 this particular problem and kind of
0 bridge that gap between what what we&;re
0 able to do as technology suppliers
0 ultimately what the grower needs and I
0 think that&;s where success is found for
0 you and others and that&;s the type of
0 thing share with everybody so anyway
0 we&;re we&;re approaching the end of our
0 half hour here and before we hang up we
0 wanted to open up to any a couple of
0 quick questions if we can
0 otherwise thank you everybody so let&;s

0 sure yeah we do have a couple of
0 questions before I launch into those I
0 just wanted to share the results from
0 our second poll question and that would
0 be which data type is most valuable to
0 your business looks like most of you
0 said nutrients dress–i
0 closely followed by and DiBiase and then
0 past conditions and yield potential and
0 with that we have we do have a couple of
0 questions the first one is if you have
0 an example of regarding the wine and
0 grape industry we do we have a number of
0 clients that are working a lot in wine
0 and grapes both in California also in
0 regions of Australia in particular again
0 some of the best examples that we find
0 that talking directly to to those other
0 service providers they&;re the ones
0 working with directly with the growers
0 and generally speaking if you&;re working
0 in a crop type we need to be able to
0 connect you with somebody else who&;s
0 working in another area that would not
0 be competitive with your business but
0 could maybe share some best practices
0 and I think and some of the online
0 communities you&;ll need a good place to
0 find those types of people but to answer
0 your question yes there&;s this
0 technologies being used quite a bit in
0 vendors our second question is can you
0 elaborate on signal training
0 so signal training is a technique that
0 we developed what we recognized that is
0 that it&;s extraordinarily difficult for
0 for us as technology developers to try
0 to create a customized solution to every
0 problem that&;s out there so what we
0 built into the software was the
0 capability for users to train the
0 software to their own needs and what
0 this basically allows you to do is
0 isolate individual signals whether
0 there&;s spatial or spectral signatures
0 in the field it&;s as simple as drawing a
0 box around the item that you&;re
0 interested in and the software trains
0 itself to look for that particular
0 characteristic and then shows you in the
0 rest of the field where that particular
0 characteristic is reappearing it&;s been
0 used to do weed detection we&;ve used it
0 in some of the examples I showed you
0 earlier you know looking for lodging
0 looking for high soil moisture content
0 so there&;s a there&;s a range of
0 applications but if you&;re interested in
0 hearing more about that capability feel
0 free to get in touch with us our next
0 question is that is the signal training
0 for soil moisture included in the
0 software
0 yeah it is it&;s included in our in our
0 pro package what one thing I&;ll add
0 shale is that all the examples that I
0 showed you before our capabilities that
0 are currently in them in the package
0 it&;s it&;s a matter of us maybe showing
0 you how to use it alright our next
0 question if I upload a Northam as a ik
0 of a slight at 5 meter height can you
0 count the spinach those germinating one
0 week after seeding what costs would it
0 have per hectare
0 that&;s a good question five meters is
0 relatively low I think we&;d have to
0 we&;ve done a lot of plant counting
0 cauliflower lettuce corn jeez there&;s a
0 lot but to answer that specific one we
0 want to take a look at it so as far as
0 cost goes it doesn&;t we don&;t charge it
0 all on a per acre basis
0 there&;s just the cost for obviously the
0 drone and the sensing device and then
0 and then there&;s a unlimited use license
0 for processing software so you can
0 process as much as you want and it
0 doesn&;t the cost is not affected by that
0 but as far as it was a stitch it&;s
0 something we&;d have to look at how what
0 the planting density is in particular
0 and what the size of the plant is at
0 this stage you want to count it so
0 please get us on that one next question
0 is uh do you have any information on
0 working with potato Gurr yes so we do
0 have some DSPs up in kind of the the
0 Idaho region kind of in the central
0 western portion of the US I think it&;s
0 another one I get in touch with us they
0 are working on some specific detecting
0 some specific conditions and potato
0 crops and we&;ve actually been working on
0 adapting our that special signal
0 detection capability for detecting
0 particular virus that presence in the
0 potato field so you&;re just in that
0 again get in touch with us any
0 experience on he trusts
0 I&;m sorry on heat stress yes
0 when we visit Costa Rica it&;s awfully
0 hot down there that we get stressed out
0 about that I guess but anyway sorry if
0 you&;re looking at heat stress I mean
0 there are a different class of sensors
0 you know obviously there&;s thermal
0 sensors and what your altom utley
0 looking at the sauce and hydration
0 condition of the plants spectral sensors
0 in the visible and the near infer brand
0 infrared bands have some capability to
0 detect the dehydration stress that might
0 be a result of heat but thermal cameras
0 are a little bit more adept at doing
0 that however the processing of thermal
0 data is a bit complex so generally
0 speaking heat stress is something that
0 it will appear as a stress condition but
0 it&;s going to be up to correlating that
0 with other factors specifically what is
0 the heat index over the last couple of
0 days to kind of attribute that stress
0 condition to heat our next question is
0 that you mentioned that you have a
0 process to maintain trust in the
0 spectral data especially during flight
0 operation can you elaborate on the
0 sensor calibration and the QA QC process
0 for spectral data yes so one thing I
0 tweaked you know this is addiction to a
0 little bit of a technical matter that
0 there&;s there&;s other material that we
0 can reference if you&;re interested in
0 learning more but when you&;re using a
0 spectral sense or whether it&;s just an
0 RGB color camera or a narrowband multi
0 spectral system or even a hyper spectral
0 system recognize that the color of
0 sunlight is evolving continuously
0 whether it&;s a sunny day a cloudy day or
0 a change of season and ultimately what
0 we&;re trying to do is estimate pigment
0 concentrations in the plants based on
0 how much sunlight is absorbed by those
0 by those pigments if the color of
0 sunlight changes you&;re going to get a
0 different measurement unless you have
0 some method of correcting it
0 traditionally what is done is to image
0 just what&;s all the calibration panel
0 that&;s put on the ground but technically
0 that&;s only valid for the one image that
0 has the panel in it we developed a new
0 technology several years ago which we&;ve
0 actually had a couple of patents issued
0 in the US
0 on that puts an on-court calibration
0 sensor onto the system so every single
0 frame of the multispectral device is
0 automatically can&;t calibrate it for
0 changing sunlight conditions and that
0 enables you to compare data over time
0 and that&;s that&;s kind of a critical
0 element to use your data to these sort
0 of models or things like that
0 every sensor that we develop develop and
0 every ship is individually calibrated
0 against the sunlight standard so those
0 are calibrated before they ship and they
0 don&;t they don&;t really need to be
0 recalibrated for that particular
0 measurement after they&;re delivered on
0 top of that as far as in-flight data
0 goes our new integration with DJI we
0 announced a partnership with DJI in late
0 March our 3 px sensor system has an
0 integration with that particular
0 aircraft that allows the operator to
0 actually see sensor data on on their
0 hand controller while it&;s in flight to
0 ensure that you&;re getting the data that
0 you need and actually the calibration
0 signals and that&;s basically the amount
0 of sunlight you&;re getting to the sensor
0 is actually a parent to you while while
0 the incident in flight and that&;s that
0 all goes to improve reliability to make
0 sure you&;re getting a beta D my next
0 questions one for Forrest why doesn&;t
0 the non-productive
0 area just show up it&;s high stress I&;m
0 sorry why did the non-productive areas
0 show up just as high stress yes okay
0 yeah that&;s a it has to do with soil
0 health in that particular area it just
0 it&;s just a bad part of soil and you
0 know it all begins with the soil when
0 you&;re out there and the non-productive
0 areas we&;re completely bare if that&;s
0 the question completely bare so you&;re
0 not going to get any reflectance and
0 dose but then as we moved away from
0 those out into the margins around there
0 where the soil composition of soil
0 chemistry started to change that&;s where
0 you started to see more of those high
0 stress areas and so when we were mapping
0 out the variable rate prescription we
0 were able to come nibble around those
0 areas and take more of those office yeah
0 as the farmer Saul said in that project
0 our next question is treat counting
0 possible with your population tool
0 tree passing so the the techniques that
0 we&;ve developed and we showed you here
0 today are geared towards primarily row
0 crops as far as counting trees we are
0 that is a you know orchards in general
0 are important crops for a lot of our
0 customers and we are actively working on
0 a capability that we will plan to
0 release in the coming months that speaks
0 directly to tools that will be applied
0 in orchards for our next question do you
0 offer training on how to use flat view
0 yes we do we provide I mean there&;s
0 there&;s online videos there&;s a user
0 manual but I think the most effective
0 thing is we do provide kind of
0 one-on-one training whether you want to
0 actually visit us here at San Diego or
0 online we do one-on-one training or one
0 with your team and I think that&;s the
0 most effective thing ultimately like the
0 forest example a lot of times success
0 comes down to really understanding how
0 the technology works so you can make
0 that leap to figuring out how to apply
0 it to a problem so we do recommend the
0 next question is another one for for it
0 how did you get this plant range data
0 into your SMS hey great question slant a
0 few exports as a shapefile and the
0 shapefile really is the key to going
0 into any of the variety of SMS systems
0 that are out there not SMS with our
0 management systems that are out there so
0 as in a compliment slant range here they
0 have done a really really good job in
0 developing the shapefile and really
0 lightening the load of that shapefile in
0 terms of size and I can tell you as an
0 SMS user it flows seamlessly out of
0 slant range as a shapefile and then into
0 SMS without a problem
0 I&;m for a next question I own a 3-piece
0 sensor but having issues to plant counts
0 how can I solve that
0 sorry having issues to do what
0 having issues to plant count
0 flat count so player counting it has to
0 be done well first of all there&;s a
0 critical phase of development when it
0 needs to be done for corn that&;s
0 typically V to the three and there has
0 to be relatively good separation between
0 individual plants so ultimately I mean
0 no the the algorithm is segmenting
0 individual plants but if they&;re
0 overlapping so if you&;re a little late
0 in development once you get to before or
0 later it&;s a little too late to do to do
0 the counting the other thing is you have
0 to fly at the right altitude so
0 ultimately we need to get a certain
0 number of pixels on each plant to
0 recognize it as a corn plant so the
0 altitude you fly at the speed you fly at
0 are critical but if you fly it at the
0 right window of growth at the right
0 altitude in the right flight speed we
0 typically see a errors that are less
0 than five percent and if you&;re not
0 seeing that please give us a call and we
0 can you do a number of pointers after
0 the next one you didn&;t mention anything
0 specific about the 3ps can you talk a
0 little bit about the advantages over the
0 three p and other sensors yeah I did
0 mention the three px briefly so the PBX
0 is the one that&;s we developed with the
0 partnership with DJI which is it&;s
0 basically integrated with the with the
0 drone much more tightly than our 3-peat
0 sensor is so from an imaging from a data
0 products point of view you&;re going to
0 get the same products out of the three P
0 or 3 px
0 the advantage of the three px is it&;s
0 just a tighter integration with the
0 aircraft it&;s an easy on easy off mount
0 on to the regular gimbal mount for the
0 for the 200 series you can actually use
0 the 3 px on on the inspire the M 100 as
0 well or the m600 sorry but with the M
0 200 series there&;s actually flight data
0 coming down from the sensor to your hand
0 controller so you&;ll see you can see
0 footprints on the ground rear images are
0 taken you can see number of images taken
0 you can see basically health status
0 information so it just makes operations
0 a lot more efficient but from a data
0 point of view that it&;s a very next
0 question that do you have any examples
0 of working in the almond industry
0 yes we are well almonds are large crop
0 here in California where we&;re based and
0 as I mentioned not just in almonds but
0 in other orchard crops we have a number
0 of customers working within citrus and
0 almonds pistachios in California Florida
0 and Australia in particular and as I
0 mentioned earlier we are working on some
0 unique capabilities for orchard crops
0 and if you&;re interested in what we have
0 done with almond to date give us a call
0 and we can share some some more details
0 but again we have a more specialized
0 orchard tools coming up in the coming
0 month do you have any experience on oil
0 palm oil palm is actually relatively we
0 do have some DSPs in Latin America in
0 particular that have a lot of experience
0 with oil palm I think in Colombia we
0 have one of our DSP partners is also a
0 distributor based at Panama City is
0 working in oil palm and again a lot of
0 these questions that are specific to
0 different crop applications we&;re happy
0 to answer the questions we can but in
0 many cases we&;d like to put you in touch
0 with others that are using a technology
0 in those applications do you have any
0 plans for a standalone app or sweep for
0 the crystal sky monitor we are
0 continuing to explore tighter
0 integration with along along those
0 entire lines with with with with DJI and
0 I&;ll just say that you know we&;re
0 working on deeper integration and we&;ll
0 have some announcements when that when
0 they&;re ready kind of 3px be integrated
0 or used with any other type of drone or
0 controller sure so you don&;t necessarily
0 have to use a 3px on board a DJI m200
0 series as I mentioned you can use it on
0 the inspire or the the m600 and it uses
0 the same mount you can get power through
0 that interface however if you
0 use it on another drone you&;re not going
0 to get those advantages of the power and
0 the data interface so you can still
0 collect data with it but from that point
0 of view what&;s 3p might be you know more
0 cost effective solution if you&;re using
0 a drone package our next question is
0 another one for forests you stated that
0 you use multi spectral and RGB for the
0 map straight forward and DVI or env re
0 or other bands you know we used strictly
0 the NDVI out of slant range for that for
0 that map that we showed you you could
0 have used the RGB but we felt like in
0 cooperation with with growers as we were
0 going through the data that the slant
0 range stress map which is the NDB I gave
0 us the best results was what we needed
0 to work off of going forward on that
0 all right for a next question is it
0 possible to detect and measure plant
0 line failures in sugarcane crop that&;s a
0 good question and I&;m not sure if I know
0 the answer to that one I
0 and I do know that we have customers
0 working in sugarcane and again another
0 another exist to puts you in touch with
0 some of the people that are using our
0 systems and sugarcane after our next
0 question how much do you see your drone
0 service providers charging for their
0 services it&;s really it&;s kind of all
0 over the place it depends it&;s gotta be
0 a better question for for us but what we
0 what we&;ve seen is it really depends on
0 the crop you&;re operating and what it
0 comes down to is how how how valuable is
0 the problem you&;re solving you know
0 ultimately the value of the data comes
0 down to that question on it and I also
0 think Mike it depends on what part of
0 the country you&;re in and what crop
0 you&;re flying and and potentially even
0 with the commodity prices at that
0 particular point in the year I you know
0 I&;ve seen it done everywhere from a cost
0 per acre with a declining cost as the
0 acres increases to package deals for
0 multiple flights through them throughout
0 the growing season and then back to
0 Mike&;s point you know what is it you&;re
0 actually trying to accomplish and and
0 sometimes those are the one-off projects
0 as well that that fall into that special
0 area so you just got to understand
0 what&;s going on out there what the what
0 the current needs are and what the
0 markets can bear but there&;s several
0 different models for those off us our
0 next question is that what new maps are
0 you working on and how soon will they be
0 available I&;ll just say that we&;re
0 working on some some more some
0 capabilities that are customized to some
0 specific crop applications that would
0 see particularly high demand around let
0 me just say that the tools that we put
0 into our systems you know there&;s a
0 balance you need to strike between being
0 flexible enough to be used in multiple
0 crops and if you make them more specific
0 to some crop allocations you can be more
0 effective with those so I&;ll just say
0 that we you know are some specific
0 applications to some high-value problems
0 that we see pretty commonly and we&;ll
0 have some announcements on those and the
0 towards off some went into the fall you
0 mentioned your tight integration with
0 the DJI aircraft is there or will there
0 be any similar integrations with the
0 bird side views Firefly six yeah we&;ve
0 had we&;ve had customers have fantastic
0 success with with the Firefly and the
0 bird&;s eye view team particularly in
0 areas that have you know a requirement
0 is large area coverage and it&;s out of
0 the scope of this conversation but you
0 know fixed-wing to rotary rotary lift
0 aircraft is a whole debate and the
0 Firefly of six is a great balance
0 between those capabilities we do have an
0 integration with the Firefly six and we
0 have customers using them and we have
0 actually distributors who are sowing
0 integrated package and we&;d be happy to
0 put you in touch with them if you&;re
0 interested great and our next question
0 is another one for fourth what was the
0 rough timeline from collecting this
0 might range data to making the variable
0 rate application okay yeah great great
0 question so the thing to keep in mind is
0 that sometimes what we do is drone
0 service providers takes a little bit of
0 time I mean we&;re dealing with growing
0 seasons we&;re dealing with reports that
0 are often very very busy and have a
0 number of competing interests around the
0 farm so again just a timeline on this
0 particular project is the crop that Milo
0 went into ground roughly in March we
0 flew it in May
0 started you know looking at the results
0 soon thereafter and then working through
0 the
0 all in developing the because we had to
0 go through when I say working in the
0 fall keep in mind that that this is a
0 multi crop grower down there so by by
0 this time last year they&;re harvesting
0 the Milo then we&;re running straight
0 into cotton after that then we&;re
0 running into fall fieldwork so it&;s
0 really didn&;t to the fall when we were
0 able to sit down and start mapping out
0 the variable rate information finalized
0 it&;s in February and then put it into
0 play in March with the fertiliser
0 herbicide application and about a week
0 later on the planning description so I
0 think it&;s know there&;s some of the
0 decisions to make and some of the data
0 you collect it&;s a multi-year process on
0 getting this done especially depending
0 on the crop location some of the Milo I
0 flew down there last year that we&;re
0 going to develop planning prescriptions
0 or won&;t be used in till 2019 just be
0 the proper occasion our next question is
0 another one for you Forrest
0 what plant range sensor do you I have
0 got a 2p right now and it&;s a workhorse
0 and no problems with it yeah I&;ve got it
0 mounted on an M 100 and I don&;t know how
0 many thousands of miles it&;s flown but
0 it has it has worked really really well
0 for us
0 and how do you manage ahead
0 I was going to jump in and say we&;re
0 well past the half hour and then I&;m at
0 beacon can you answer any questions but
0 as long as we have questions I can keep
0 going but okay sure yeah there&;s still
0 plenty of it through so I guess is less
0 to you guys whenever we want to call it
0 and answer the questions as separately
0 so for our next one is how do you manage
0 to compare vegetation indices through
0 their time without radiometric
0 calibrated images
0 let&;s well that&;s a good question I mean
0 the way our system operates there&;s a
0 there&;s a calibrated measurement for
0 every single image so that&;s really not
0 not really an issue so I you know I I
0 guess in the circumstances that the
0 sensor failed I think it maybe that&;s
0 the question but again I guess that&;s
0 not a failure that we&;ve seen generally
0 speaking if if you&;re you know if you&;re
0 using another sensor system that doesn&;t
0 you know you have gaps between available
0 measurements you have to interpolate
0 that and that can be complex especially
0 if you&;re dealing in partly cloudy
0 situations let&;s do two one all right
0 two more questions um do you recommend
0 drone deployed for mission planning and
0 can it be used for image image
0 processing as prism also mention we have
0 DJI mitrice and to 202 times platform
0 yeah we have a we do have an integration
0 with drone employ and we have a lot of
0 customers that are using drone deploy as
0 their as their flight planning software
0 and something maybe we don&;t we don&;t
0 promote enough but if you know if you
0 want to take the images from our sensor
0 system and have them process deploy you
0 can do that and bypass our processing
0 methods and some people have
0 applications and do that and they&;re
0 very happy with it and again it&;s
0 probably something we don&;t promote as
0 much as much as we should but that
0 capability and integration does exist
0 one final note I just before I ask the
0 final question of our panelists a few
0 people have been asking if this webinar
